Choplifter: too heavy for Superman

No matter how safe, strong, secure, or sure we feel, every good thing hangs by a string. We sleep suspended on a spider web and be it force of god, will, or inertia, there is little that keeps us from dropping of our own weight. Some things can never be put back together again, because all the king's horses and all the king's men know it's not the fall that kills you.

I'd say be careful, but we know that's not the cure. I'd say live in the present, but what then do we live for? If you straighten up and fly right you'll miss the forest for the trees, but save yourself and soon you'll have no one left to please.

The truth is I'm tired of giving advice I can never seem to follow. I'm tired of playing these games I can never seem to win. I'm stuck in a low, dark place and waiting for a lift. I need someone else to do it this time.

Policies and processes have their purposes, but they also have their place. Because the one thing I've learned from this corporate existence is that if you want something done you have to do it yourself, and it's better to apologize than ask permission...Even if you don't really mean it. The going may get ugly- it will certainly get tough- but the point is that you're going, and going is the only way to get anywhere.

From politics to the workplace, from the petty grievances of neighbors to the heady disputes of presidents and prime ministers, all too often the game is zero sum. My gain is at your loss, throwing me under the bus is how you overcome. But it doesn't have to be that way. We can get to yes by uncovering common interests instead of exploiting each others weak spots. The people you think are in your way don't need to be jumped on, rolled over, kneed in the face, or have fireballs hurled at them. Because some ways of winning cause us to lose a little bit of ourselves with the victory, and eventually you'll have won too much to have anything left to lose.
